Peptide lot numbers and traceability

Product names, catalog codes, variants, lots, and order numbers identify different parts of a material's record. Learn how to connect them without substituting one identifier for another.

Traceability is the documented connection between the material selected, the unit received, and the records reviewed for that unit. A QR code or searchable number can make that connection easier, but the identifier alone is not the complete traceability record.

For research purchasing, the practical goal is straightforward: another authorized person should be able to follow the record and determine what was ordered, which configuration arrived, which lot was supplied, and which available documentation was reviewed.

Know what each identifier is for

A catalog code is not a lot number. A product can retain the same catalog code across multiple lots, while each lot remains distinguishable in the relevant records. Two vial sizes may also share a product name but require different variant codes.

  • Product name: the human-readable name of the material.
  • Catalog code: the supplier's identifier for a product or defined configuration.
  • Variant or SKU: an identifier that may distinguish vial mass, pack size, or another option.
  • Lot or batch number: the identifier assigned to a particular production or testing lot.
  • Order number: the identifier for the commercial transaction.

Build the record from selection to receipt

Traceability begins before checkout. Record the exact product name, selected size, declared format, and public catalog code. When the order is confirmed, connect that information to the order number.

At receipt, compare the delivered material with the order record. The label should provide enough information to identify the material and its lot or batch. Record the receipt date and note any visible shipping or labeling issue without changing or obscuring the original label.

  • Catalog listing and selected variant.
  • Order confirmation and delivered vial or vial set.
  • Lot identifier and available lot-specific document.
  • Internal laboratory receipt and review record.

Verify that a document belongs to the lot

When a certificate of analysis or another lot record is available, first confirm that it belongs to the supplied material. Match the material name and lot number exactly, then review the catalog code, testing date, laboratory, and reported methods or results.

Do not use a document from another lot as a substitute. A prior record may illustrate the type of testing previously reported, but it does not establish a result for the material currently in hand.

Bio Pointe's batch lookup returns a public record only when one has been published for the entered identifier. No result means no matching public record is currently indexed; it does not establish why a record is unavailable. Confirm the identifier and contact research support when necessary.

Account for variants, paired sets, and blends

Multi-size and multi-component products require an extra identification step. For a multi-size product, record the selected vial mass and matching variant information because the product name alone may not distinguish the purchased configuration.

For a paired-vial set, determine whether each vial carries its own lot number or whether the documentation defines a set-level relationship. For a co-vialed blend, record the complete component line and declared mass ratio. Do not assume two vials shipped together share a lot, and do not assume two components named together occupy the same vial.

Keep a concise laboratory record

Preserve original source documents. If an internal record needs correction, make the change without hiding the earlier entry and state why it was changed. Follow the laboratory's own quality and data-retention procedures.

  • Exact material name, catalog code, variant, declared mass, and physical format.
  • Lot or batch number, order number, receipt date, and number of vials.
  • Location of the saved lot document and the date it was reviewed.
  • Reviewer identity and notes on any discrepancy and its resolution.

Resolve discrepancies before relying on the record

Stop when the label, order, and document do not agree. Recheck the identifier exactly as printed, including dashes or suffixes. Keep the material separated according to laboratory procedure while the discrepancy is reviewed, and send support the order number, product name, catalog code, lot number, and a concise description of the mismatch.

Traceability is strongest when uncertainty is recorded and resolved—not when an identifier is forced to fit.
